03 — Control emphasis
When everything is important, nothing is. Pick one thing and make it matter.
"When everything is important, nothing is. Pick one thing and make it matter."
Do this now
Look at your current layout or presentation. Point to the single most important element. Now ask — does the design actually make that the first thing someone's eye goes to? If not, that's the problem to solve.
Unpack
Emphasis isn't decoration — it's argument. Where you put the visual weight tells the audience what the idea is really about. The most common mistake isn't bad taste — it's indecision. When designers aren't sure what matters most, they treat everything equally. Equal emphasis is visual silence.
Draw it.
